Projects

What a project holds, how to create and switch between projects, and what deleting one does.

This page explains what a project holds, how to create and switch between projects, and what deleting one does.

#What a project holds

A project is the unit everything else belongs to:

  • Monitors, and the alerts they send.
  • Notification channels and the project's notification settings.
  • Maintenance windows and the incident policy.
  • Incidents and the status page.
  • Team members, their roles, and pending invites.
  • API keys. A key reaches one project and nothing else.

The plan of the project's owner governs it. A monitor a team member creates counts against the owner's monitor limit, and a Pro or Team feature is available in the project when the owner has that plan.

#Create a project

A new account has no projects, so the dashboard starts by asking for one. To add another, open the project switcher in the dashboard header and choose New project, then enter a name of up to 18 characters.

An account can own 1 project on the free plan, 3 on Pro, and 5 on Team. Projects you were invited to do not count.

#Switch projects

The project's name in the dashboard header opens the switcher. Switching keeps you on the same section, so the Incidents page of one project leads to the Incidents page of the next. All Projects in the account menu lists every project you own or belong to, with a search field.

#Project settings

The Project Settings page holds:

  • Project name. Only the owner can rename a project.
  • Project ref. The project's identifier, with a Copy button. You pass it in API paths such as /v1/projects/<ref>/channels.
  • Access tokens. The project's API keys. See REST API.
  • MCP server. The endpoint and a ready-made prompt for an AI agent. See Connect an AI agent.
  • Danger zone. Delete the project.

#Delete a project

Only the owner can delete a project, and the dashboard asks for the project's exact name to confirm. Deleting removes the project and everything in it at once: its monitors with their check history and incidents, its channels, maintenance windows, status page, escalation steps, members, pending invites, and API keys. This cannot be undone.
